Hi, I’m Malik Spearman
In the last 10 years I’ve specialized in shaping the experience of products at complex and highly regulated industries for B2B & B2C enterprise software at both startups and corporations. Turning high-stakes features into accessible experiences that are simple, trustworthy, and built to scale.
Principles
Design-Led Innovation
The best product decisions I have been part of started with a design question, not a requirements document. Design is not the last step in the process — when given the right seat, it is the one that finds the problem worth solving in the first place.
Good design starts with structure, not aesthetics. Before a frame is touched, the workflow is understood, the roles are mapped, and the failure states are accounted for. A design system is not a deliverable — it is a record of every good decision made, applied automatically to every decision that follows. And the distance between a great design and a great product is almost always a collaboration problem.
Surfaces Between Human-AI
AI does not fail because the model is wrong. It fails because the interface does not give a person enough context to know when to trust it and when to question it. Getting that right means designing for doubt as much as for confidence — making the system's reasoning legible, not just its output.
User & Market Research
Research is how I avoid designing for assumptions. The friction in a workflow is rarely where stakeholders think it is, and the insight that changes a product is almost never in a brief. It comes from asking the right questions from the right people before a single wireframe is drawn.
